How Varicose Vein Treatment Works
Varicose veins develop when the one-way valves inside your leg veins weaken, allowing blood to flow backward and pool. Modern treatment works by closing off these faulty veins so blood reroutes through healthy ones. Your body then naturally absorbs the treated vein over time.

Often, yes. When varicose veins cause symptoms like pain, swelling, or heaviness, treatment is considered medically necessary and is typically covered by insurance. A comprehensive ultrasound evaluation is usually required to document venous insufficiency for coverage approval. We verify your coverage and explain any out-of-pocket costs before treatment begins.
Modern treatments are minimally invasive and performed under local anesthesia. Most patients describe only mild discomfort — a far cry from the vein stripping surgery of decades past. Over-the-counter pain relievers are usually sufficient afterward, if needed at all.
Most in-office procedures take 30–60 minutes, and patients typically walk out and resume normal activities the same day. Walking is actually encouraged immediately after treatment to promote healthy circulation.
Treated veins are permanently closed and absorbed by the body — they do not reopen. New varicose veins can develop over time, however, especially with a strong family history, which is why we recommend periodic follow-up and why treating the underlying venous insufficiency matters.
