What to Expect During the VenaSeal™ Procedure

Prior to the procedure, a thorough ultrasound examination of the area to be treated will be conducted. This ensures the creation of a precise course of action during the VenaSeal™ treatment process. During the actual procedure, a catheter is placed in specific areas along the diseased vein to deliver small amounts of the medical adhesive. You may feel some mild sensation of pulling or tugging. Ultrasound is used throughout to guide and position the catheter. After treatment, the catheter is removed and a bandage is placed over the puncture site.

VenaSeal is performed under minimal local anesthesia, and most patients report only a mild pulling or tugging sensation during the procedure. Because there’s no heat and no tumescent anesthesia (the multiple numbing injections used in heat-based treatments), many patients find VenaSeal to be one of the more comfortable vein procedures available.

Both permanently close a diseased vein, but the method differs. Radiofrequency ablation uses catheter-delivered heat and requires tumescent anesthesia around the vein; VenaSeal uses a medical adhesive with no heat, no tumescent anesthesia, and usually no compression stockings afterward.
